Shopify released its Fall '26 Edition, named "Exponential", on October 28, 2026. The message is simple: artificial intelligence is no longer a tool next to the store, it is becoming the way merchants sell, operate and buy. AI agents like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot can now find your products and check out with Shop Pay. Sidekick, the admin assistant, was rebuilt to handle technical tasks. Point of sale recognizes more in-store customers and checkout gets new fraud tools.
As with every Edition, there are many announcements and not all of them matter to you. At Maze, we read Shopify's official pages and kept what really changes for a Shopify merchant in Quebec or Canada, especially if you sell technical products, sell B2B or run a physical store. For each update, we note what is available now, what is coming soon and what to do before Black Friday.
The Fall '26 Edition at a glance
Shopify Editions are the major updates Shopify bundles and presents throughout the year. The Winter '26 Edition came out on December 10, 2025. This one carries a name that sums up the ambition: "Exponential".
Here are the five main themes of this Edition:
- Agentic commerce: your catalogue becomes accessible to AI agents, which can search, recommend and buy on behalf of your customers.
- Sidekick and Canvas: Shopify's AI moves from answers to actions, in the admin and in store design.
- Checkout and fraud: Shopify Protect brings together new tools to block risky payments and respond to disputes.
- Point of sale (POS): better in-store customer recognition and new tools for staff.
- B2B, markets and catalogues: scheduled pricing, shipping by market and B2B search filtered by catalogue.
One important point before diving in: several features are labelled "coming soon" or "rolling out soon" on the official Edition page. Others do not specify the country or the plan. Before building your year-end strategy on a new feature, check that it is active in your Shopify admin.
Agentic commerce: your store is already in AI agents
This is the heart of the Edition. Shopify states that every store is agent-ready by default, thanks to new WebMCP tools on the storefront and checkout. These tools let an AI agent search products, edit the cart and complete a purchase after the shopper approves it.
Here is what Shopify announced:
- Shop.md: a skill that turns an AI agent, such as ChatGPT or Claude, into a personal shopper. According to Shopify, it searches more than a billion products and lets shoppers pay with Shop Pay and track their orders.
- Shop Pay in personal agents: payment works first in Muse from Meta, Claude Duet and Instinct. Shopify notes that more than 400 million people already use Shop Pay.
- Selling in Google: your products can be sold in Google Search, including AI Mode, and in the Gemini app, with checkout powered by Shopify. Orders land in your admin like any other.
- Compare-at prices shared with agents: the compare-at price is now passed to agents through Shopify Catalog. The agent can therefore mention a discount to your customer.
For merchants, two new screens matter more than anything else. The first shows whether your store is eligible for Shopify Catalog and what to fix to qualify. The second is a knowledge base, under Sales channels then Agentic, where you review and approve the information shared with agents: return windows, shipping destinations, gift services, policies and FAQs. Shopify drafts a first version from your store, but you approve it.
Why does it matter? An AI agent does not read your product page like a person does. It reads structured data: title, description, attributes, price, stock, policies. If that data is incomplete, the agent will recommend a competitor. For a manufacturer or distributor of technical products, product data quality becomes a visibility issue, not just a conversion issue.
Our advice: use the weeks before Black Friday to check your catalogue's eligibility and review the knowledge base. Also make sure your compare-at prices are real: the agent will repeat them word for word to your customers. If you want to know where your store stands, our AI Readiness report shows what agents see of your products.
Sidekick, Canvas and the new admin: AI in everyday work
A rebuilt Sidekick
Sidekick, the AI assistant in the Shopify admin, was rebuilt. According to Shopify, it can now run calculations, write code, search the web and remember your instructions from one session to the next. It proposes a plan that bundles several changes, which you approve once before it applies them. Some recommendations are tested in SimGym, the shopper simulation environment introduced in the Winter '26 Edition, before being suggested to you.
The merchant stays in control: every change must be approved. That is a good thing, because an assistant that edits a theme or an automation without review can break a feature your customers use every day.
Canvas, the new store editor
Canvas was announced on October 1, 2026 and is in early access. It displays every page of the store on a single canvas, rendered from the theme's real code. You can ask Sidekick for a change or click an element to edit it directly. Shopify specifies that Canvas is not replacing the current theme editor yet.
Our recommendation: test Canvas on a copy of your theme, never on the live theme. An early access editor is not the tool to use in the middle of peak season. For changes that affect conversion, a structured approach remains more reliable, as we explain in our article on choosing between a full redesign and targeted CRO optimizations.
A lighter admin
The Shopify admin also gets a new look: new colours, typography, spacing and icons, a collapsible side navigation and Sidekick available as a floating chat on every page. Shopify also announced connectors that work with nine AI agents, including ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity. They let you manage products, inventory, orders and performance without leaving the conversation.
Checkout, fraud and marketing: what matters before Black Friday
Shopify Protect against fraud
Shopify Protect brings risk and dispute tools together in the admin. According to Shopify, Shopify Payments already blocks more than 12,000 high-risk payments every minute. The new features announced:
- blocking high-risk orders before payment authorization;
- a custom risk rule builder that you can test on past orders;
- AI-written dispute responses, tailored to the bank and the reason.
Note: the official page says Shopify Protect features are rolling out, and chargeback protection for orders paid without Shop Pay is announced as "coming soon". Do not build your Black Friday fraud plan on a feature that does not appear in your admin yet.
A more flexible checkout
Several checkout improvements are rolling out: custom fields for delivery instructions or gift messages, payment methods displayed as tiles and a confirmation animation on the thank you page. A more compact form and Apple Pay by QR code from other browsers are announced for later. These are small gains, but at checkout every bit of friction removed counts. Our list of 12 quick wins for Shopify checkout optimization remains the best place to start.
Marketing and data
Shopify Messaging offers a pre-built Black Friday email campaign that you can preview, customize and schedule. It also adds automated WhatsApp messages to recover lost sales. Campaign Autopilot expands to Microsoft Advertising and Snapchat. Finally, apps can send their events into Shopify Analytics, such as loyalty points redeemed or emails sent.
For a merchant who already uses Klaviyo, these additions do not change the retention strategy. They are mostly useful for smaller stores getting started. If you want to review your automations before peak season, our essential Klaviyo flows and our 7 CRO tactics for Black Friday are a good complement.
POS: get to know your in-store customers
Point of sale gets practical updates for businesses that sell online and in store. The most important one is customer recognition. Shopify POS can now recognize more in-store customers, even on a first visit, if they have already paid at a store that uses Shopify Payments. If the shopper chooses a digital receipt by email, text or in the Shop app, the purchase is linked to a customer profile and you get their contact details.
Why does it matter? According to Shopify, a known in-store customer has a lifetime value more than 60% higher than an unknown one. A customer who leaves an email at the till can then receive your retention flows, just like an online customer.
Other POS updates worth noting:
- Scheduled inventory counts: you create counts in the admin by item, location and timeframe, then staff complete them in POS, with a record of who counted what.
- Shared recent carts: one associate starts a cart and a colleague can finish the sale on another device.
- Sales by associate: every sale is tied to the associate who made it, with an activity log.
- Up to 20 barcodes per variant, with format validation in the admin. Useful for a distributor that receives the same product from several suppliers.
- Organization-level staff roles, exclusive to Shopify Plus.
These additions confirm the direction set since Shopify POS 10.0: one system for inventory, customers and sales, online and in store. If you are still comparing options, our analysis Lightspeed vs Shopify POS details the hidden costs of a separate system.
B2B, markets and catalogues: selling to several audiences
For manufacturers and distributors that sell to both consumers and businesses, the Edition brings targeted improvements:
- Catalogues with scheduled pricing: you schedule price and product publishing changes by market. They automatically revert at the end of a promotion.
- Rollouts: you schedule a launch, an event or an A/B test by bundling the theme, checkout, catalogues and discounts.
- Filtered B2B search: with the Algolia app, a B2B customer only sees products from their catalogue in search results, at the negotiated price.
- B2B catalogue CSV exports: the vendor appears on every row, which speeds up price updates.
- Shipping by market: you manage shipping options specific to each region or company location.
- Multi-entity payments: you can use Shopify Payments across the business and connect another payment provider for each legal entity.
A useful reminder: since April 2, 2026, Shopify's native B2B features are available on the Basic, Grow and Advanced plans, with a maximum of three active B2B catalogues. Unlimited catalogues and direct assignment to companies remain exclusive to Shopify Plus. To see what a B2B portal looks like on Shopify, check out our B2B project for Juliette et Chocolat or our guide to making the B2B leap to Shopify.
On the development side, Hydrogen, Shopify's framework for custom storefronts, was rebuilt to work with any framework. It is generally available, as is Vercel Shop, a Next.js template built on Hydrogen. This is the type of architecture we used for Looky's Shopify Plus redesign.
Your action plan for the next 90 days
Not all of these updates require immediate action. Here is the order we recommend to our clients:
- Check your catalogue for AI agents. Open the Shopify Catalog eligibility screen and fix what is blocking. Review the knowledge base under Sales channels then Agentic.
- Validate your compare-at prices and policies. Agents repeat what you publish. An invented compare-at price or a vague return policy will cost you trust.
- Take stock of your apps and scripts. Two official deadlines are coming, according to Shopify's developer changelog. On January 1, 2027, public apps that still use non-expiring access tokens will receive authentication errors. On March 1, 2027, Shopify will stop injecting script tags into storefronts. Ask your app vendors if they are ready.
- Test without risk. Try Canvas and Sidekick on a copy of your theme, after peak season.
- Turn on what helps in-store sales. If you run POS, promote the digital receipt: every email collected at the till feeds your retention.
The biggest risk is not missing a feature. It is leaving poorly connected systems and incomplete product data in place while AI agents become a sales channel. Our article on unified commerce explains how to structure your platform to take advantage of it.
